Chelsea didn’t try to teleport. But after accidentally teleporting onto classified Navy vessel SeaSatellite5, all she’s rocking is the boat.

Trevor didn’t believe Chelsea had teleported on board. The same girl who’d given him a brief lifeline to sanity three months ago literally fell from the sky, under a mile of ocean, directly to him. But Trevor’s happiness at seeing her is cut short by a centuries-long family grudge. Chelsea is Atlantean, which would be totally fine if Trevor’s family weren’t Lemurian, the enemies of Atlantis. But Trevor wants no part of his family’s war. The only thing he wants is Chelsea, Atlantean or not.

But when SeaSatellite5 uncovers Atlantean ruins, placing the entire crew in the crosshairs of an ancient war, Trevor will have to come clean about his heritage to Chelsea and the US Navy. There are those who want the Atlantean artifacts inside the ruins, and only Trevor knows the relics for what they really are Link Pieces, tools used by the ancient civilizations for their time-travel war.

With lies and shifting alliances abound, Chelsea and Trevor must think fast to save SeaSatellite5. If they don’t, the Lemurians will do whatever necessary to seize the artifacts and Atlantis will be destroyed forever.

3.5 stars, actually.

I've never read a beta hero like Trevor before. His emotional inner dialogue, his constant fascination with heroine Chelsea, it was fun to read. I like how he was geeky-cool, willing to be hurt in defense of others, but largely physically inept.

Chelsea, the heroine, on the other hand is bad-ass. Punk band rocker, archeology students, taker-over of kisses in secret submarine broom closets and pushing Trevor against the wall so she can have her way with him.

I dug them both.

But i was confused a lot. There's two secret worlds at war that Trevor only knows about, and things get fuzzy here because they're all stories and secrets and not real to him-- and thus to me, either. And there's confusing political loyalties and agents and alot of characters jumping to conclusions on a variety of micro and macro levels with very little evidence, and with such confidence that it bugged me sometimes.

The biggest ones tended to be Chelsea jumping from 0 to 60 to major conclusions a punk rocker archeology undergrad should have NO way of knowing. Like, when they're being attacked and she's all like "well I know everyone is still alive because this secret society attacking us that I had no idea about just an hour ago definitely will not kill us because they need us" and "I just made the find of the century (and this also bugged me because technically SHE didn't find it, the ensign on the bridge found it) and now I know immediately that I must tell the Captain of this secret submarine to not tell anyone about it because, you know, global upheaval".

I felt like I existed in a fog about the plot at times, and other times I really didn't care because Chelsea and Trevor were so cool to hang out with.

Your mileage may vary. If you have a high ambiguity tolerance about plot and unexplained character actions/motivations, then you'll enjoy hanging out with them as much as me. If you need a cohesive plot and some consistency to make it easier to suspend disbelief....this one may not be for you.

Ends on a major cliffhanger. While there's some getting jiggy in the broom closet, the actual culmination of their physical attraction is all metaphor and sparkly lights, so fairly safe for your teenagers to catch you reading.

Gyre Book One of the Atlas Link Series eBook Jessica Gunn Reviews

I was excited by the premise, but couldn't get into it.

The characters didn't feel real. Chelsea and Trevor, the protagonists, seemed to think and inner dialog in much the same manner.

Also, the story progressed slowly. After a few chapters, I skipped a couple, but the plot didn't seem to have progressed much further and the story wasn't any more interesting.

I noticed others commented on the pace as well, yet gave it three stars because it was well written. Maybe the well written parts were later on in the story, but unfortunately, I couldn't find the desire to plod through.
Loved it!
I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series.
I'm in two minds about Gyre. On the one hand, I enjoyed the story - I'm a fan of the Atlantis myth and liked the author's development of it. It's certainly an interesting theory. I liked the blend of ancient culture with high-tech futurism. The characters are believable, and in Chelsea's case a little aspirational which is brilliant. I felt their pain, wanted to know more. I would have liked to delve a little bit deeper into their characters, but there was plenty to go on to feel involved and plenty in the storyline to keep you reading. In fact, I would have rated the book higher if it wasn't for the editing. It's sloppy and distracting - missing words, or random words that shouldn't be there, homophone confusion (e.g. peaked instead of peeked), in one case the drop cap at the beginning of a chapter is for a different word - so if you're at all anal about grammar, your eye may twitch a bit while reading. If I was the author, I'd be more than a little peeved with the publishers. That said, it is worth pushing through the typos to finish Gyre. It's a fun, easy read and I'm keen to get started on Book 2.
Original, exciting, inticing... and it just keeps going and you don't want it to end! Just... wow!

Not just a series to follow but an author to keep an eye on... surely more good reads to come!!
I LOVE this book. I was there when Jessica was writing her first draft and to be honest I had no idea the result would be a story like this! I'm incredibly impressed and would recommend this book.
Gyre was a very pleasant surprise, as I had no idea of what to expect from this book.I very much enjoyed it and found the characters to be extremely likeable and well developed. This story was quite unique and drew me in easily. I'd highly recommend this to lovers of science fiction and Atlantean mythology.
